Staff Data Scientist
Company: Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Location: Berkeley
Posted on: November 6, 2024
Job Description:
Lawrence Berkeley National Lab's (LBNL) Energy Geosciences
Division has an opening for a Staff Data Scientist to join the
team. With the successful completion of the Exascale Computing
Project and the transition to regional-scale earthquake simulations
with the EarthQuake SIMulation (EQSIM) framework, the ability to
organize, process and analyze very large datasets is critical to
the success of ongoing program activities. With the support of the
DOE Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security and Emergency
Response, EQSIM regional simulations have initiated in the San
Francisco Bay Area, Southern California and the New Madrid region
of the Central U.S.There is a programmatic need for a focused Data
Scientist to provide subject matter expertise and work the back-end
of the EQSIM workflow including the development of data processing
to permit efficient visualization and display of regional ground
motions, to perform analysis of ground motion spatial variability,
and development of an approach to display ground motion intensities
in a manner that best informs engineering risk assessments. This
will include the development of effective large-data visualization
methods to effectively display region-wide characterizations of
risk for critical components of energy systems. The Staff Data
Scientist will work independently under general direction as part
of a multidisciplinary team. What You Will Do:
- Work the back-end of the EQSIM workflow, based on the
utilization of synthetic ground motions generated from regional
scale simulations. Take a lead role with the development of i) data
processing for visualization and dynamic animation of ground
motions for analysis of their spatial variability, ii) display
approach of ground motion intensity for engineering risk
assessments, iii) large-data visualization for risk analysis of
energy systems iv) understand and master the utilization of the ZFP
program for effective data compression, ZFP was developed under the
Exascale Computing Project to effectively reduce the size of large
scientific datasets. This will include the development of
quantitative criteria to ensure the proper degree of compression
without the loss of critical scientific information.
- Work successfully as part of an integrated multidisciplinary
team of earth scientists and engineers to perform end-to-end
earthquake simulations.
- Contribute to/prepare publications based on results and
analysis of data.What is Required:
- Master's degree, or equivalent work experience, and at least
six years of relevant experience in structural or earthquake
engineering (PhD preferred).
- Experience utilizing and visualizing earthquake ground motions
generated from the SW4 geophysics program.
- Experience in working in high-performance computing
environments.
- An understanding of geotechnical engineering and basic
geophysics of wave propagation is preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge in developing visualization methods
(e.g., GMT) for earthquake risk assessment.
- Strong skills to effectively execute and process the data from
thousands of earthquake simulations on massively parallel computer
platforms is essential.
- Ability to work in a diverse environment.Notes:
- This is a full-time, career appointment, exempt (monthly paid)
from overtime pay.
- Salary range: This position is expected to pay $12,000 to
$12,500 monthly, which fits within the full salary range of $10,829
- $18,273. Salary for this position will be commensurate with your
qualifications and experience, including skills, knowledge,
relevant education, certifications, as well as aligned with the
internal peer group.
- This position may be subject to a background check. Any
convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate
to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a
conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant
from being considered for employment.
- Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National
Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.Want to learn more about
