Justice and Empowerment believes everyone deserves to live in a
just and equitable society where every person is empowered to
achieve their dreams. Since our founding in 2012, we have centered
the East San Jose and Mayfair communities by providing impactful
support in housing and homelessness prevention, immigration legal
services, educational support, mental health services, and
community organizing. Amigos has built a strong reputation in the
local community by listening closely to the brilliance and
resilience of the people who live, work, and raise families in East
San Jose.Position Overview:The Director of Education understands
the issues of highly impacted communities of color, where access
and resources are missing and the opportunity gap is highest.
Director of Educational Programs, in collaboration with the
Executive Director and the top management teams, establishes,
initiates, and implements, all the education programs undertaken by
the organization including, but not limited to, the following:
After School, Summer School, Shelter Educational Programs, and
Scholarship Program for primarily first-generation Latino and other
students attending college as the first in their families. The
Director of Educational Programs may develop and initiate other new
programs identified as necessary by the top management team and/or
the Executive Director. The Director of Educational Programs plans,
initiates, and implements all such education programs in ways that
support student academic achievement/success. All programs serve to
help to address the Latino opportunity gaps and systemic racism in
education. Program offerings include essential academic literacy
and vocabulary support, subject matter support, and social
emotional learning (SEL) support. Programs are designed to
strengthen children's foundational skills through offering a rich,
high-quality curriculum, including enrichment, and by supporting
the teaching and learning models associated with students' school
programs, all of which is consistent with current California Common
Core Standards.Primary Duties:
- Working with the top management team and Executive Director to
identify necessary education programs that support the core values
of Amigos and that lead individuals and families to greater levels
of self-efficacy and independence
- Initiation, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of all
education programs and operations including, but not limited to,
after school, summer school, shelter educational programs, and
scholarship program, field trips, all enrichment activities,
coordination with volunteers and mentors, all sports programs, and
all student nutrition programs.
- Hiring, supervising, managing, and evaluating all education
staff members, including all full and part time staff, tutors,
adult mentors, and other community volunteers
- Ensuring a safe learning environment for all students and
staff
- Maintaining equipment and inventory related to educational
programs
- Preparing and implementing pre and post program
assessments
- Utilizing Amigos 2-generation (2-Gen) approach to learning
- Developing, managing, and reporting all program budgets,
including approval of purchase orders associated with such
budgetsOther Job Responsibilities:--- Oversight of lesson planning
for academic literacy, associated subject matter program support
and related learning activities that support the best practices
current in education that are supported by research--- Supervise
the staff that teach and support students, and hire, manage, and
evaluate program, and staff--- Assure proper maintenance and
reporting of daily attendance reports--- Ensure current
implementation and maintenance of all data entry requirements---
Ensure a healthy and safe learning environment for students and
staff--- Present a positive role model to students and staff,
exhibiting professional behavior to staff, children,
parents/guardians, and the general public--- Work with the Director
of Human Resources to resolve any staff and/or volunteer workplace
issues--- Attend staff meetings and professional development
trainings, and perform professional development sessions as
appropriate--- Carry out all policies and procedures as assigned---
Complete other duties as assignedQualifications:The Director of
Education will have the following competencies and knowledge base
and/or possess the following skills:--- Ability to lead a diverse
staff
- Understanding of Common Core Standards and Balanced literacy---
Lesson planning and implementation--- Classroom management,
including ability to train others in such skills--- Safety/Risk
Management in a child-centered program--- College degree, valid
teaching credential, or equivalent experience in directing
programs--- Experience working with children in a variety of school
settings.--- Successful experience in working with a wide range of
local educational, governmental, and non-profit agencies---
Knowledge of working in racially diverse communities,
under-performing schools, and economically poor areas.--- Prefer
CPR and/or First Aid training--- Spanish bilingual
PreferredEducation: Director will have the following experience
and/or licenses:Teaching credential or successful experience
working in after School and/or summer programs requiredValid
Teaching Credential preferredValid California Drivers
LicenseStatus: Full TimePhysical Demands:To perform essential
functions for the role, you should be able to:
- Speak, listen, and communicate with both adults and
children
- Use hands or fingers to handle objects, tools, or controls
- Walk, sit, and reach with hands and arms
